Introduction

Copper alloys are metal alloys that have the metal copper as their chief component. There are about 400 types of copper alloys. A Unified Numbering System (UNS) has been developed for metals and alloys by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

Wrought alloy numbers range from UNS C10000 to UNS C79999. UNS C18135 is a cadmium-chromium copper alloy that has high tensile strength, high conductivity and excellent resistance to softening.

The following datasheet discusses the chemical composition and properties of copper UNS C18135.

Fabrication

Machinability – The machinability rating of copper UNS C18135 is 20.

Welding - Soldering and brazing welding methods are rated as excellent. Gas shielded arc welding and butt welding can also be performed to get satisfactory results. However, it is recommended that spot welding, seam welding, oxyacetylene welding, and coated metal arc welding should be avoided.

Hot Working - Copper UNS C18135 can be hot formed. The recommended hot working temperature is between 815-927°C (1500-1700°F).

Cold Working - The cold working capacity of this alloy is rated as excellent.

Aging - The aging temperature for this alloy is between 454 and 565°C (850 and 1050°F).

Applications

Copper UNS C18135 is chiefly used in applications where high stress and high temperature are common.

Copper UNS C18135 finds application in:

  • Electrical Industry – For products such as electrical components, contacts and studs, resistance welding electrodes, and electrical conductor material. 
  • Aerospace sector
  • Cable industry
  • Military material application.
